As the first concrete building in the community built for Japanese business interests, the 1914 S. Hata building occupies a major site on the main beachfront street but had fallen into disrepair by 1992. The County had condemned it due to structural failure and it was on the verge of being torn down when the architect was commissioned to undertake a full restoration.
