The 1923 Seto Market, set on the bank of the Hanapepe River on Kauai was entirely destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992. Working from two faded snapshots and the evidence in the remaining floor, the architect replicated the original structure well enough that the elderly owner commented, “gosh, I thought the building was gone, but here it is just as we always knew it”. That is about as good as historic restoration can get.
